Rock Garden

The Rock Garden Trail is just about 30 miles east northeast of Farmington, NM, in San Juan County. The trailhead is located on off of SR 173, a little over 12.5 miles after your turn off of US 550 (in Aztec) and onto SR 173. The area is relatively flat, at around 6,000 feet, but contains huge hills of slick rock throughout (very similar to that found in the Moab, UT area). The Rock Garden itself (which is located among Waypoints 10 through 17) is more of a playground, than a trail. There are several "hard" obstacles throughout the area, however, most have bypasses, which allow this trail to be rated "moderate". The trail is less than 3 miles round trip, and only takes a few hours to get in and back out, but you can spend all day playing on the Rock Garden’s numerous obstacles.

Difficulty Rating:  Two (2) Moderate
(based on my personal rating scale on the Trails Page)

Here are a few shots from the Rock Garden Trail.

Hummers do NOT flex!
Instead, they flop onto their side!

It took two Jeeps to winch this big guy back on flat ground, where he belongs!  :o)
