Upper Broad

The Upper Broad Trail is located about 20 miles Northwest of Las Cruces.  To get to the trailhead, take I-25 North out of Las Cruces and take Exit # 19.  Turn left (West) onto SR 157 (Ft. Seldon Rd), then right (NW) onto SR 185.  Travel approximately 6.8 miles and turn left onto the dirt road.  Ranging in elevation from approximately 4,100 feet to 4,900 feet, the trail bypasses the Broad Canyon Trail to the north, and then drops into the canyon further to the west.  The canyon bottom contains a series of boulders ranging from small to as large as 24 inches or so in diameter.  Shortly after Waypoint UB-15 is an optional "in & out" canyon climb to the left.  Near Waypoint UB-20 is an optional waterfall climb to the left (the main trail goes to the right).  Just prior to Waypoint UB-21 is a fork in the trail.  To the right is the Off Broadway Trail, and to the left is the exit from the Upper Broad Trail.  The trail is only a little under 11 miles long and takes approximately 5 hours or so to complete.  To get back to civilization, turn left onto the paved road after going through the gate, and go southeast for approximately 11.8 miles.  Turn right at the intersection and go 6.75 miles.  Turn left at Carralitos Ranch and then jog right southward a little over 3 miles to the I-10 north frontage road.

Difficulty Rating:  Two (2) Moderate
