Sun Mar 16, 2025

Meet at the closed Family Dollar Store just past the gas station coming into San Yisidro at 9am, Leave at 9:30 Sharp!

I will lead a ride up into the La Ventana Mesa, all day ride . Will try to be back to the start point by 4 or 5 pm at.  Bring a full tank of gas, food and water, dress for mountain weather.  Bring a camera.

HIGH Clearance 4x4, with recovery points front and back, low range gear box., and good off road tires.  This a easy-low moderate run fit for stock 4X4s. GMRS radio {channel 4} helps you to know whats going on during the ride. Mountain "pin stripping" is possible, so if you do not want to chance a tree limb rubbing against the side of your vehicle, don't go on this ride. We will try to avoid limbs if possible.

Run Description

Distance10.5 miles (one direction, trail only)

Location & Scope:  From San Yisidro NM, take US 550 North for 27.9 miles.  The trail begins on the right where the old highway 44 goes up the hill.

Description:  The La Ventana Route is a superb route featuring a huge diversity of topography, geography, and flora. It is also managed by a diversity of agencies! The bulk of the route is managed by the Bureau of Land Management with the final 1.1 miles within the SFNF. Starting out high desert terrain, it meanders through the broken sandstone of La Ventana Mesa before dropping steeply on the east side toward the Forest Boundary. Crossing a strange geologic dike, the scenery changes dramatically, featuring large Ponderosa pines.
