Mesa Gallina/ Cerro Alesna Ride:
This is part of the Cimarron Mesa BLM Special Recreation Management Area , mentioned in this month's Trail Tales newsletter.
All Day Ride. This area is south of I-40, and Highway 6. Meet at The 66 Pit Stop gas Station, Gas up there. Last indoor restroom.
Meet at 8:00am, driver's meeting and leave at 8:30 AM.
This is a Moderate level 4 Low trip. High clearance, good off road tires, recovery points front and back are required. Bring food and drink, a chair, camera, and watch for wildlife.
There is more than one Cerro Alesna in New Mexico. There is a Cerro Alesna west of Mt Taylor, also! alesna is Spanish for awl, a small pointed tool used to punch a hole in leather. This area is known as the Lucero Volcanic Field. Shield volcanoes and lava flows. A Google search will show more information on this area. Cerro Verde is a shield volcano in this area.
We will see, Cerro Alesna, the one down in this area , on this ride!
Dress for the weather that day. We will stop and air down when we get to dirt roads.
Remote area with great views of Mesas and canyons. Many roads to explore. This is a favorite NM4W ride.
We will return on the same roads and air back up before we get back to I-40.
