Carson National Forest (Ojo Caliente/Lamadera/El Rito/Abiquiu/Chama 1.0)

Sat Jun 28, 2025

I'm wanting to expand the groups rides and area sof exploration to a place closer to where I was raised and somewhat explored as a child (mostly for firewood and pinion) - Northern New Mexico.  Come see where some of the most desired elk and deer hunting is located, along with some mines that include:

- Little Julia Mine
- Triple E Mine
- Globe Mine
- Queen of Sheba Mine
- La Madera Flurospar
- Big Bug Mine
- Hidden Treasure Mine
- Acon Mine
- Sunnyside Mine
- Werner Mine
- King Mine

Meet and air down point will be the Lamadera Post office at 8:30am, meeting will commence as soon as everyone arrives, but no later than 8:45am, leaving by 9am.  We will drive 1.6 miles north on NM-519 to FS-222T42 (aka Vistas Overlook).  This will take us through the Carson National Fores for approximately 5 miles where we will see some amazing views in all directions.  The route intersects FSR-222E (aka La Madera Loop), where we will be immersed deeper into the forest with tall pines and wide Pinon trees.  This is where most of the mine sites are located and we can hopefully be there around the lunch break so we can walk around a bit in the shade.  This section will be an ~9 mile adventure where we will climb an additional 1900 feet in elevation.  We will meet up with FS-45, where we drive for ~6.5 miles to the end at NM-519.

OnX claims this is a 21 mile long ride with total elevation gain of ~2600 feet.

Have a trail ready rig, recovery points front & back, air up device, good off road tires, Low Range, GMRS radio, dress for weather that day and shoes for walking on uneven ground.

Pack a lunch, water, snacks.  Pinstriping is almost certain, but I will be going up a couple of times for pre-run and clearing.

I will get better time estimates over the next week or so and perhaps the last stop in Espanola could be La Cocina - one of my favorite places for New Mexican food.  An alternative could be another of my frequented places when I visit my family - Dandy Burger where they not only have some amazing green chile cheesburgers, but New Mexican food also including Tewa Tacos. There is of course El Parasol - where the best shredded beef tacos are made, along with burritos. Of course there is plenty of fast food in Espanola (Freddy's, Sonic, Taco Bell, Denny's, Pizza 9, Burger King, Chili's), but why bother when you can have amazing Northern NM cooking.  I'll have to make some for the group soon... ;)

This ride will be the start of a few that I want to lead in that area of NM and Carson.  Next I want to head from Lamadera and head east to El Rito, and into Abiquiu.  Eventually I would like to take the long route to Abiquiu from Jemez.
