Cedro Peak Snow Run

Sat Feb 11, 2017 9:00AM     RIDE COMPLETED

Cedro Peak Snow Run Summary

On Saturday, February 11, 2017 eighteen 4X4 vehicles met at the Sandia Ranger Station approximately 1/4 mile South of Tijeras, NM on state highway 337 and aired-down their tires. A driver's brief was held at 9:20am which provided a general description of the Cedro Peak ride and informed drivers there were several sections of the trail which contained moderate stair-stepped rock formations. Drivers were asked to sign the club forms, keep together as a group, and tune into CB channel 4 during the trip.

The vehicles departed Sandia Ranger Station at 9:30am and drove 1/4 mile South on highway 337 and turned East on Chamiso Canyon Road and drove approximately 1/2 mile. Forest Road 462 was taken for approximately 3 miles with a rest stop to photograph the Tijeras Valley area. Forest Road 13 was taken next which included melting snow, muddy trails, and small stair-step rock ledges. After a second rest stop, the vehicles continued on Campground Road to Cedro Peak arriving at approximately 11:30am where participants took a lunch break at the base of the observation station & towers.

After a 45-minute break, the vehicles turned around and drove back along Campground Road to Forest Road 542 past the Cedro Peak Group Campground. After passing the campground, the group headed downhill on Cedro Peak Road and inflated tires on Juan Tomas Road.

2/12/ Update

2/8/17 Update:
Kerry Wood drove part way up 462 and it was dry as far as he went.  He expects that there could be some wet spots higher up, but he is keeping the roads open, so the run to Cedro is a go!  I'd suggest avoiding FR12 as that valley already is deeply rutted and could be wet still.

Let do something different!  Meet at the Sandia Ranger Station Parking lot approximately 1/2 mile south of the traffic lights in Tijeras on NM Hwy 337 at 9:00 AM for a snow run around Cedro Peak.  Dress warmly, it could be cold. The difficulty will be determined by the amount of snow.
