Gilman Tunnels Exploration
We had a very enjoyable and memorable ride into the North Jemez Mountains. Our twelve-vehicle caravan departed from San Ysidro and headed north on NM-550 toward the San Miguel area. We did some trail clearing on Forest Road 534C while driving to the Great Lookout. Then we headed south on Forest Road 17 and returned via the recently-opened Gilman Tunnels which were only open to one-lane traffic. We only had two wrong turns on this exploratory run due to GPS-tracking apps not matching the actual forest roads!
